Kenya youth business trust

GET KENYA TO WORK!

You can get Kenya to work.

We all know the challenges that face young Kenyans today. They have ideas, energy, hope and skills in abundance.

But the opportunities are so limited. There is no collateral to get access to capital, and that capital anyway comes at an exorbitant interest rate.

Not any more! The Prince of Wales’ Business Trust has just opened its doors in Kenya – the 22nd country on a growing list of success stories. Founded by HRH the Prince of Wales in the early 1980s, this organization has helped some 50,000 disadvantaged youngsters to start their own profitable businesses.

The Kenya Youth Business Trust (KYBT) links Nairobi’s young, upwardly mobile executives as mentors to wannabe entrepreneurs with great ideas. AND we offer a three year, no-interest loan.

Meet Caleb and Elizabeth

A year ago they scraped a living in Nairobi’s Kibera slum. But they dreamed of more and they had an idea how to get there. If only they could access some capital to buy the basic equipment for starting up.

Caleb saw an advertisement for a KYBT loan in the local chief’s office and he and his wife applied. The local KYBT board liked their plan and linked him up with a mentor who helped them to develop it.

With a loan of 90,000 Kshs, Caleb and Elizabeth have established a community phone booth, charging customers competitively to make telephone calls. They get assistance each month and at no cost from their mentor, Deloitte & Touche accountant Zena Mohammed.

They are now building capital to diversify their business.

All the entrepreneurs are under 30, are resident in Nairobi slums, and come to KYBT with their own business plans. These plans are screened by a local committee of successful young businesspeople. Each month we receive some 40 new business plans, applying for a KYBT loan and mentor.

You can foster the talent and future of these young people. The average loan given by KYBT is $2,000. This provides not just employment, but also education, health care and security. We provide accountability as a registered not-for-profit organization with an eminent, apolitical Board of Trustees.
